Finally, the Clipper system across a plethora of Bay Area transit agencies including Muni begins to upgrade the old legacy system, fare-paying riders will experience minor slow downs for the coming weeks ahead.
**BEWARE Clipper users may need to HOLD their cards 4-9 seconds on select transit Clipper readers. This is due to a system upgrade where cards update themselves to be compatible with the new system, a modernized version of Clipper acting more adjacent to a bank card.
In order to update the legacy system, cards will be individually transitioned from the old system to the new one. This process will be done automatically or manually by request by phone, website or by continuing to use the card. Benefits include free or reduced price inter-agency transfers.
Today, a trip on Muni ($2.85), BART (Varies) & AC Transit ($2.50) would charge you for each agency, with minimal discounts applied automatically when paying with Clipper. The new system will accept both existing Clipper Cards or Contactless bank cards while also only charging for the most expensive part of the trip. For example, if you pay Muni ($2.85), while also riding BART ($4.85), your total would be discounted to $5.20 instead of $8.70 if taken within 2 hours. Further rides would also be free of charge (if at or under highest fare paid) within 2 hours. Calculate your commute here.
We are so excited for this change! Many SFUSD educators travel county lines and hop on multiple agencies getting to and from school where they put on their brightest smiles for SFUSD students. We at TAP are delighted they will now be able to save a bit more money with every transit trip they take. Eventually, Bay Area transit agencies are slated to "fare-cap" or limit how much a person pays per day, week, month & year.
For our youth and seniors, you'll soon be able to apply for discount cards ONLINE! No more email or in-person vist necessary!
